Robin Holgate and Suzanne Spicer outline their experience at the Museum of Science and Industry in Manchester

We used the assessment checklists to identify some of our key weaknesses. We decided to embed learning in all the Museum's activities through

  • Developing an access and learning vision to aspire to
  • Creating a learning ethos in the organisation
  • Providing a high-quality learning environment for all users

We wrote an access and learning strategy, outlining four aims as priorities for the next five years. We used the main sections of Inspiring for All as criteria.

Our aims are:

  • creating a welcoming environment that inspires and supports learning by developing staff and facilities
  • identifying needs and opportunities by consulting with existing and potential visitors and engaging them in the development of new learning opportunities
  • maximising access to our collections and resources by developing new programmes and services to meet audience needs
  • working creatively with partners to deliver learning opportunities

We then produced an Access and Learning Strategy Action Plan detailing our activities and resultant outcomes to meet these top priority aims.
