Implementing Inspiring Learning for All will require leadership both at a strategic level and across the organisation. Identifying champions for learning will help in this process.
Learning champions:
Make a convincing case for learning as a top priority. This includes profile and resources - staff, budgets, time, spaces
Act as passionate advocates with external stakeholders - such as Learning and Skills Councils and LEAs
Persuade funders of the valuable and unique contribution of museums, archives and libraries in inspiring learning
Effectively engage and support users in their learning
Learn and act on their own learning.
Learning champions may be:
Members of governing bodies with belief in the learning power of museums, archives and libraries
Senior staff - director or chief executive
Learning and access staff
All staff engaged in supporting learning (i.e. everyone in the museum, archive or library)
External supporters or agencies who are positive about the role of museums, archives and libraries in support learning e.g. friends organisations, parents, teachers, the family learning team or Basic Skills providers.
How to increase the numbers and influence of learning champions:
Lead by example - your enthusiasm will inspire others
Actively communicate so others know and understand what's going on
Attract funding through your learning programmes
Go to visit others on their terms and invite them back to the museum, archive or library
Work in partnership and build direct links with the right people at the right level.
