'The Generic Learning Outcomes have given us a language and a framework to demonstrate to more traditional learning providers the unique contribution that libraries, museums and archives make to the learning agenda. This will help us develop local learning partnerships to deliver community benefits based on individual learners' needs. It will also help us to make more effective bids for external funding as we can now demonstrate learning outcomes.'

Creating a common language

'(The) GLOs allowed me to analyse and report on data that had proved difficult, unpromising or unquantifiable. They provide me with a common linguistic tool to describe what I am enabling in learners. The language is clear, unambiguous and importantly - powerful.'

Developing our understanding and practice

'The outcome of the data analysis did not justify initial scepticism. Although standard comment and complaint forms, and user surveys, yielded very little, other more focused sources were surprisingly fruitful. The exercise repaid the work that it demanded and yielded valuable insights both in respect of the most effective ways of collecting rich data and the most effective ways of facilitating learning.'

'For staff involved the project has been an important learning opportunity. For the curatorial staff the concept of GLOs was unfamiliar and the application to the concept of the comment card was revelatory, providing a greater understanding of the learning impact of the displays mounted in the Gallery. Hitherto this information had been used as a management tool to inform the presentation of the display, but now can be used with confidence to indicate and test the learning impact of our displays.'
