When people enter a museum, archive or library, the behaviour of staff; orientation and signage; layout, colour and lighting will all contribute to their experience and their learning.

The building itself may be a barrier for many potential users. In Birmingham, the central library is being redesigned to overcome these barriers and to create an outward-facing learning space and resource within Birmingham's new Cultural Quarter.

Inspiring for All and the Generic Learning Outcomes provide a language to express new aspirations and new relationships with users. Here you can:

  • Read how the Imperial War Museum used the Generic Learning Outcomes to develop a brief for designers, researchers and learning staff. Download Developing the Churchill Museum at IWM.
  • Learn how the Department of Culture and Community Learning in Poole used Inspiring Learning for All to brief architects working on a new Community Learning Centre. Download Developing a Community Learning Centre in Poole.
  • Read the Clore Duffield Foundation's reports on Spaces for Learning and Spaces for Art

Now go to Raise the profile to continue

'If we had access to resources like this, we could make learning real… Having the freedom to walk a bit more, have a bit more space, spread out into this environment is so conducive to learning. It's very special.'
